Creation and Restoration of Oak Forests – A Practical Guide
La nostra ultima pubblicazione in Italia
The progressive abandonment of agricultural and pastoral areas is profoundly changing the Italian landscape, but it can also create new opportunities for the restoration of forest habitats. It is in this context that the new publication “Creation and Restoration of Oak Forests – A Practical Guide” was developed as part of the Life4OakForests project (LIFE16NAT/IT/000245), funded by the European Union’s LIFE Nature programme. The publication focuses on experiences in creating new oak forests from open and abandoned areas.
The publication brings together practical examples, guidelines and useful insights for all those involved in land and forest management, with particular reference to an approach based on forest management for nature conservation. At its core are several experiences in the creation of oak forests through reforestation practices that differ from traditional approaches. These interventions were carried out in the Vena del Gesso Romagnola Regional Park and aimed at restoring the priority habitat of Community interest 91AA* “Eastern white oak woods”, a habitat found in several areas of Italy and associated with forest formations dominated by downy oak (Quercus pubescens).
Oak forests are a fundamental component of the Italian landscape and play an important role in biodiversity, soil health and ecosystem balance. Many of these environments have now been reduced or simplified, making it necessary to identify new strategies to promote their restoration and increase their resilience.
The interventions described in the publication aim to encourage the development of more natural and diverse environments, capable of supporting rich biodiversity and evolving over time in a balanced way. The goal is to come as close as possible to the dynamics of naturally occurring forests, making the most of natural processes and creating favourable conditions for the development of complex and thriving forest ecosystems.
By sharing these experiences, the publication aims to contribute to the dissemination of innovative approaches to forest and land management and to the restoration of oak forests, providing tools and ideas to support the establishment of forests that are more resilient, diverse and better able to face the environmental challenges of the future.
