6–8 October 2026

Hotel Villa Völgy, Eger

The venue for the plenary sessions and thematic workshops, as well as the accommodation for project participants.
Located in a peaceful setting, the impressive buildings of the hotel complex are surrounded by a beautiful 2-hectare park. Hotel Villa Völgy is an excellent venue for conferences and professional events, offering modern technical facilities, extensive experience in event organisation, and meeting rooms capable of accommodating a wide range of requirements.

The Main Objective of the Conference

The LIFE4OakForests project, launched in 2017 to develop and implement nature conservation management methods for Natura 2000 oak forest habitats in an Italian regional park and three Hungarian national parks, is approaching its conclusion.
The project partners have considered the time appropriate to evaluate the work carried out over the past years and to share its results within the framework of an international conference. The event will provide an opportunity to present the project’s achievements, discuss the lessons learned, and exchange experiences with forest managers, researchers, conservation professionals and, in particular, those responsible for the management of forests located within national parks and other protected areas.
A dedicated round-table discussion will focus on the practical experiences gained during the project and on the future application of the developed management approaches in conservation-oriented forest management.

Project Background

Where did this unusual and innovative approach originate, and how did a complex conservation concept evolve into a fully recognised forest management practice?

Project Results

What have we achieved? What tangible results has the project delivered, and why is it worth rethinking the way we view and manage native oak forests?

Beyond the Project Results

In addition to its planned objectives and measurable outputs, the project has generated a wide range of indirect and unexpected benefits. Many of these outcomes were not foreseen at the beginning of the project, yet they have become some of its most valuable achievements.

Main Conference Topics

The conference will focus on the following key topics:

Theory of Conservation-Oriented Forest Management

The LIFE4OakForests project was built upon the idea that forest management and nature conservation are not opposing objectives, but complementary approaches that can support one another.

Types of Conservation Interventions

One of the central objectives of the LIFE4OakForests project was to design, test and evaluate a range of conservation-oriented forest management interventions in Natura 2000 oak forest habitats. The project provided a unique opportunity to compare approaches implemented under different ecological, silvicultural and management conditions in Hungary and Italy..

Conservation-Oriented Forest Management in Practice

How can the principles and tools of conservation-oriented forest management be effectively integrated into everyday forestry practice?.
