A Collectively Farmed Woodland Transformed into a Diverse Forest

WWF Hungary and the Bükk National Park Directorate (BNPD) invited media to showcase the results of interventions implemented within the LIFE4OakForests project. The event took place on 21 May 2025 at BNPD’s Cserépfalu project site. The experts of BNPD, WWF and HUN-REN Centre for Ecological Research introduced the various interventions which aim to increase diversity, eliminate invasive species and support natural processes of the forest.

The interventions in this forest area within the framework of LIFE4OakFor project started in 2018 and by now results are visible. Invasive black locust stands have been cleared, admixed tree species have populated the gaps. Connected to deadwood, different fungi, saproxylophagous insects and among many others, different woodpecker species have resettled in the area.

The interventions – creating gaps and deadwood, fencing small patches to defend regrowth from ungulates – implemented here, can be applied in cultivated forests without extra cost or profit loss. The project consortium is collecting the results and experience of the interventions in a guideline for foresters which is expected to be released soon.
